Anupam Kher Rocks at Miss India-Canada 2012

It was a night of entertainment, prestige and glamour all rolled up into one; the 22st annual MISS INDIA-CANADA Event had it all this on August 18. The sold out show was truly a memorable experience that those present will remember for years to come. At the end of the evening, Mallika Kapur of Hamilton, Ontario won the esteemed title of Miss India-Canada 2012.

With a red carpet entrance, dazzling cocktail hour, and stunning stage set provided by Dream Party Decor, patrons were “Wowed” right from the very beginning. The 16 delegates began the evening with a high-energy dance sequence that captivated the audience and kept them in their seats for the remainder of the evening.

Notable attendees were Patrick Brown, MP - Barrie; Pardeep Kumar, Vice Consul - Consulate General of India Toronto, Hon. Michael H. Tulloch, judge of the Ontario Court of Appeal, and Justice Katrina Mulligan, to name a few.

Soon after, the opening host, Aashish Rajhans, introduced the emcees for the evening - Karen Johnson former national primetime anchor at the Weather Network and Mohit Rajhans, one of the producers at Breakfast Television. Karen commenced the evening by introducing the distinguished Panel of Judges: Naval Bajaj, President - ICCC; Suby Bhardwaj, Barrister & Solicitor; Dr. Ranjit Chandra, President - Allergy & Nutrition Clinic; Ajit Khanna, Chair - Panorama India; Soula Kioussis, VP of Marketing - The Clorox Company of Canada; Ginni Sethi, President - Radisson Plaza Hotel; Melvyn Solmon, Partner & Barrister - Solmon Rothbart Goodman LLP; Sasha Zivanovic, CTO - Ethnic Channels Group

The judges were then put to the test as each delegate completed the first three segments: Evening Gown, Indian Dress and Talent. Next, the emcees announced that Arthi Chopra of Milton, ON won the WIND People’s Choice Award; Sunandini Verma of Waterloo, ON won BRITA Ms. Congeniality, and Sharon Philipose of Ottawa, ON won Ms. Photogenic..

Organizers, Sanjay Agnihotri and Gautam Sharma were then called upon to say a few words and present veteran actor, Anupam Kher with the Special Achievement Award for his contribution to cinema and social causes.

Kher enthralled the crowd with his charisma, wit, and humour. The audience could not get enough of him.

The top 5 finalists were then announced in random order: Ekta Rana of Brampton, ON; Mallika Kapur of Hamilton, ON; Meena Asdhir of Misissauga, ON, Ruchi Kumar of Richmond Hill, ON, and Seema Singh of Woodbridge, ON. The final segment of Question & Answer involved asking each contestant a different question by the panel of judges.

As the anticipation of the winner grew, the audience was treated to two jaw dropping entertainment piece: Well Rounded Hoops, and acrobatic hoola hoop act.

Patrons waited in complete silence as Karen and Mohit announced the results from the accounting firm of Kunjar Sharma and Associates. The Second Runner-up was Meena Asdhir, the First Runner-up was Ruchi Kumar and this year’s MISS INDIA-CANADA 2012 was Mallika Kapur.

Mallika Kapur is a 21 year old that was born in Calcutta, India. Mallika’s family now lives in Bangalore while she pursues a Bachelor of Health Sciences at McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario. She has a passion for performing arts and has been trained in Bharatnatyam for fourteen years and has also played lead roles in several theatrical productions. She is also an avid golfer and is a member of the McMaster University varsity golf team. A highly accomplished scholar with an interest in medicine, Mallika aspires to become a physician in the near future. She looks forward for using the MIC title as a platform to introduce herself to both the Indian and Canadian entertainment industries as well as raise awareness about management of diabetes in the South Asian community.

After the show, Sanjay Agnihotri remarked "This certainly was the most successful Miss India-Canada event to date. We were honoured to have Big Magic International and Brita on board for the very first time-all the sponsors that were a part of this year's show, witnessed a truly glamorous and entertaining evening. And of course, the charm that our celebrity guest, Kher displayed at the event will remain in the hearts and memories of those that were fortunate to attend. Moreover, we are overwhelmed with the support we received from the community this year. The audience and delegates have elevated this year's show to historic highs..and I can't wait to see what our team comes up with next year!"
