A Street Festival Like None

It was a street festival like none, not on any street but on the tarmac of Canada’s busiest international airport. There was no need for an airline ticket to experience airport culture at this family-friendly event.

This was the 3rd Annual Street Festival, a community event, at Toronto Pearson Airport on September 14 which had its largest crowd in attendance. To make it all happen, over 200 volunteers were at hand to talk and explain what happens behind the scenes at the airport. There was something for everybody - airport equipment up close to see, kids zone for play and food to eat.

As I have said since the PQ first announced this plan back in the 2012 election campaign, I categorically oppose it. Like our fellow Canadians elsewhere, we Quebecers are open, positive people. We believe in defending one another’s freedoms, not in restricting them.

PQ's Charter of Values Unnecessary & Discriminatory

The World Sikh Organization of Canada is disappointed by the Parti Quebecois’ announcement on Septrember 19 of its “Charter of Quebec Values.”

The PQ Minister in charge of the charter, Bernard Drainville announced today that the wearing of “overt” religious symbols would be banned for civil servants on the job.  While turbans, kippas and hijabs would be banned, small crucifixes or other religious jewelry would continue to be permitted.

The Honourable Joe Oliver, Canada’s Minister of Natural Resources, issued the following statement, on September 10, following the release of the Deloitte & Touche LLP (Deloitte) report on the job creation and economic benefits of TransCanada’s Energy East Pipeline Project proposal.

 “The Harper Government is focused on creating jobs, economic growth and long-term prosperity. So we welcome today’s report on the proposed Energy East pipeline, which would transport western Canadian oil to the east and new markets abroad.

Capital Markets Regulator Established

The Ministers of Finance of British Columbia, Ontario and Canada agreed on September 19 to establish a cooperative capital markets regulatory system and invite all provinces and territories to participate in the proposed system.

The cooperative securities regulator will better protect investors, enhance Canada’s financial services sector, support efficient capital markets and manage systemic risk.

The Honourable Jim Flaherty, Minister of Finance, on September 18, led a cross-country series of events highlighting the Government’s support for Canadian manufacturers to create jobs and growth, both at the national and local levels.

The Harper Government announced on September 9 that it will freeze the Employment Insurance (EI) premium rate for employees at the 2013 level of $1.88 per $100 of insurable earnings for 2014, and additionally that the rate will be set no higher than $1.88 for 2015 and 2016.
