Irwin Cotler Urges Action on Unresolved Justice Issues: Indigenous Rights & International Prisoners of Conscience

On March 31, the Pearson Centre for Progressive Policy launched The Pursuing Justice Project with a gala celebrating the life's work of Hon. Irwin Cotler. Leaders from law, business and government, came to the Omni King Edward Hotel to hear the former Justice Minister of Canada discuss pursuing justice with former journalist Indira Naidoo-Harris, MPP, Halton. The evening was a tremendous success and raised crucial funds for The Pearson Centre and The Pursuing Justice Project.

Obhrai expresses concern

Calgary Conservative MP Deepak Obhrai is expressing his concerns that new rules the party imposed earlier this year may make the Conservative Party into an “elitist and white-only” club. 

Obhrai, the dean of the Conservative caucus, says he is frustrated with the party’s rules that has raised annual membership fee to $25 — “the highest of any party” — and set the entrance fees for leadership contestants at $100,000.

Government of Canada doubles the length of Work-Sharing agreements

The Honourable MaryAnn Mihychuk, Minister of Employment, Workforce Development and Labour, on April 27, encouraged employers to take advantage of extended Work-Sharing agreements that will help them retain workers during difficult economic times while also keeping them on the job. The Minister made the remarks at Heavy North Construction Ltd. in Fort McMurray – a current participant in the Government’s Work-Sharing program – and later hosted a roundtable discussion with various stakeholders in the Wood Buffalo area.

Kung Fu was used to define any discipline that required hard work and perseverance to achieve mastery. It later became a generic term to represent all Chinese martial arts. It was popularized by the late Bruce Lee through his action packed movies in the 60s and 70s. Many young men and women were deeply inspired by them.

After Lee’s passing 1973, other talented actors such as Jet Li, Jackie Chan, Sammo Hung, Donnie Yen and others continued to keep the interest in Chinese martial arts in the West. Many masters travelled to the US and Canada and opened schools.

Islamic State could influence very few youths in India, asserts Minister of State for Home Affairs Haribhai Parthibhai Chaudhary: The Islamic State (IS) terror outfit could influence very few youths from India, Union Minister of State for Home Affairs Haribhai Parthibhai Chaudhary told the Rajya Sabha (Upper house of Indian Parliament) on April 27. Citing the number of Indian youths arrested by the National Investigation Agency (NIA) and state police forces, Chaudhary said: "The NIA and police in some states have registered cases and arrested some active cadres affiliated to IS in the recent past."Hindustan Times, April 28, 2016.

US Defense Secretary Ashton Carter and his Indian counterpart, Manohar Parrikar, announced on April 12, that Washington and New Delhi have “agreed in principle” on a “logistics exchange agreement” under which the US military will be able to routinely use Indian bases and ports for resupply, repair, and rest.

A longstanding US objective, the “logistics agreement” has far reaching military and strategic implications for India and the world. Behind the backs of the Indian people, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government and the Indian military-security establishment are transforming India into a “frontline state” in Washington’s drive to strategically encircle, subjugate, and if need be wage war on China.
