Some people will respond to the breakup of the government in J&K with a “yeh tho hona hi tha”. It was seen as an unnatural alliance when PDP and BJP came together in 2015, with the state having thrown up a fractured mandate. Mufti Mohammad Sayeed had himself called it the coming together of “the north pole and the south pole”.

But the PDP patriarch, schooled in the pragmatic politics of Congress and wanting to leave an enduring legacy, had opted for it, even while admitting “my biggest opposition comes from within” (referring to his daughter Mehbooba Mufti). As destiny willed, she had no option but to continue the coalition after his sudden death, or the PDP might have split.
